Tyas Cottage is a grade II listed historic barn and cottage combination nestled within an isolated hamlet shared by only two other permanently occupied properties. It is in this location that the very first powered mill was built in the Colne Valley in the early 16th Century. Adjacent to an ancient cobbled road, it is near both Slaithwaite and Marsden but far enough away to boast a wide selection of native wildlife including deer, sparrow hawks and kingfishers.

Within the cottage are many antique furnishings, not the least of which is a Georgian mahogany four poster bed complete with a carved, wooden ceiling. Downstairs is laid out with a dining hall, a twin-bedded room, shower room and WC and a spiral staircase leading up to the second floor. After ascending, guests are treated to a wood burning stove in a sitting room adorned with wooden beams, a double bedroom with the Georgian bed and an en-suite bathroom as well as an additional room with a twin bed and en-suite restroom. Because downstairs has a bedroom, shower and toilet, it is accessible for guests with mobility issues.

Other included features are fully stocked linens and towels, cleaning materials, free Wi-Fi, underfloor heating, enough logs for one fire, a colour television, a full range of electronics, a private terrace, barbeque, shared garden and water supplied directly from a spring. It is environmentally friendly as well, fixed up with a heat pump, solar panels and heavy insulation. A walk along the garden stream brings guests to a mill pond and waterfall. Because of its outdoor-friendly nature, pets are welcome. Smoking is allowed so long as it is outdoors.

While Tyas Cottage is wonderfully secluded, it is still close to a number of great attractions and things to do. Hikers and nature enthusiasts will find plenty to do and see while hiking the surrounding forest, moors and valleys. A short walk along a canal running between the two nearby towns brings restaurant lovers to the Olive Branch Restaurant or The Riverhead where all drinks are brewed in house. If you want to venture further out, a short drive will bring you to attractions perfect for any age group including the Victoria Market, Royal Armouries, The Magna Centre, Chatsworth and Chester Zoo.

The closest village, Slaithwaite, boasts many charming features. It is within walking distance of the Pennine Way and hosts the fantastic Dove Cottage Nursery where many local gardeners go to discuss the finer points of their projects. For guests wanting to unwind, the new Titanic Spa is only two and a half miles away and complete with splendid facilities. For groceries, head to the Green Valley Grocer Cooperative to stock up on local produce as well as their much revered artisan bread.

One Review on “Tyas Cottage

  1. Perfect week in this idyllic setting. The peace and tranquility in this most beautiful house is just what we needed. The walks from the door with our dog were much appreciated. This truly is a walkers paradise. We loved our stay. Thank you, John and Vicky. PS The cakes in the bakery by the canal in Slaithwaite are to die for.”
